Younger, More Diverse Listeners Fuel Podcasting’s Expansion.

Podcasting’s audience is becoming younger, more diverse and increasingly female, creating new opportunities for advertisers as the medium expands beyond its traditional listener base, according to a new Audacy Insights report.
The report, which draws on data from Edison Research’s Infinite Dial Report, identifies Generation Z, women and multicultural consumers as increasingly important audiences for advertisers seeking to capitalize on podcasting’s growth and the relationships listeners develop with podcast hosts.
“Podcasting is no longer just for the Millennial white guy,” Audacy says. “The audience who built this medium (and we say this with love) was a pretty specific slice of America: educated, male, probably somewhere in his early 30s, very into long-form interviews. That guy is still here. But he’s got a lot of company.”
More than 35 million Americans in Generation Z now listen to podcasts monthly, making the medium one of the generation’s leading entertainment and information formats. By 2029, Gen Z and Gen Alpha are projected to account for 40% of the overall podcast audience.
Reaching those younger consumers requires advertisers to recognize how their media consumption differs from that of previous generations, particularly when it comes to discovering new content.
YouTube is the leading podcast discovery platform among Gen Z listeners, accounting for 28% of discovery, followed by social media at 26%. Short video clips, recommendations and social media personalities increasingly introduce younger consumers to podcasts, making video and social platforms important components of podcast marketing and distribution.
Audacy also identifies authenticity and trust as important factors in attracting younger listeners, who tend to respond to content and advertising that reflect their interests and experiences.
Women represent another significant growth opportunity for podcast advertisers. Female podcast listenership has tripled over the past decade — a development Audacy attributes partly to the emergence of relatable hosts and programming that fosters communities around shared interests and experiences.
The report also identifies podcast advertising as a particularly effective way to reach female consumers, finding that women are significantly more likely to remember advertising heard during podcasts than advertising encountered through other media channels.
Podcasting is also attracting a more ethnically diverse audience. Latino podcast consumption increased from 43% to 60% over a two-year period, while listenership among Black Americans has also grown.
Those changes are broadening podcasting’s appeal and creating opportunities for advertisers to reach consumers who may be more difficult to engage through traditional advertising channels.
For brands, Audacy says the changing audience underscores the importance of reconsidering media strategies that continue to emphasize podcasting’s original demographic of predominantly male, college-educated Millennial listeners.
The report suggests that podcasting’s combination of audience growth, listener loyalty and advertising recall makes it an increasingly valuable channel for marketers seeking to connect with younger and more diverse consumers.
It also points to the importance of incorporating podcasts into broader advertising strategies that include social media, streaming and video.
“The podcast listener you’ve been trying to reach on social, on streaming, on every platform where they’re actively avoiding you? They’re here. They’re listening. And unlike almost everywhere else in media, they’re actually paying attention to the ads,” Audacy says.
