A new medical evaluation has upended the ongoing guardianship case of longtime radio and TV host Wendy Williams, with tests indicating she does not have frontotemporal dementia.
According to a report by TMZ, Williams recently underwent a “battery of tests” in New York City. A neurologist who examined her determined that she does not have frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a degenerative brain condition that had been central to her court-ordered guardianship.
The 61-year-old Williams has been under guardianship since 2022, a decision based largely on a previous diagnosis of FTD and aphasia cited by her legal guardian, Sabrina Morrissey. The diagnosis had been used to limit Williams’ autonomy and grant control of her personal and financial affairs to Morrissey.
The earlier findings followed a series of hospitalizations and public concern about Williams’ health. At the time, the condition was described as progressive and irreversible.
Williams, who has publicly discussed her sobriety after years of alcohol and drug addiction, has repeatedly asserted that she is mentally competent.
“I’m in this place where the people are in their 90s and their 80s and their 70s,” she told “The Breakfast Club” in January. “I have breakfast, lunch and dinner right here on the bed. I watch TV, I listen to radio, I look out the window, I talk on the phone.”
When asked about her mental state, Williams insisted she was “not cognitively impaired,” comparing her current living situation to a “prison.”
In August, a judge denied Williams’ motion to end the guardianship following a medical evaluation that reaffirmed the FTD and aphasia diagnoses. Morrissey’s control was extended through Nov. 3.
FTD is a degenerative disorder that typically worsens over time and is not reversible — a factor often cited in long-term guardianship rulings.
Her attorney, Joe Tacopina, is preparing to request a jury trial to determine whether the guardianship should be terminated.
