Inside Radio/PrecisionTrak’s format counts for June show growth for seven of the top 10 formats, which taken together add a total 39 stations from May. There hasn’t been this much recorded month-over-month growth since last December, when all of the top eight formats combined for an added 50 outlets.
Year-over-year, six formats brought in a total of 174 stations, while for 2025-to-date, five formats accounted for 89 additional stations.
When it comes to steady growth from one month to the next, no format can match fourth-ranked contemporary Christian, which since September 2024 has added 43 stations without a down month, for a 3% gain. Since March 2025, fifth-place Spanish-language formats have only boosted their total, adding 25 new outlets for a 2% lift.
While second-ranked religion (including religious teaching, hymns, and other related content) is only up steadily from April, that doesn’t begin the tell the complete story. Year-over-year and year-to-date, no format has added more, with 66 and 37 new stations respectively, for 3% and 2% gains.
Also seeing steady growth from April are third-place news/talk (eight new stations) and sixth-ranked classic hits (+7), with classic rock and sports, at seventh and eighth, both adding from May (+3 and +2).
Neither top-ranked country or 10th-place top 40 brought in new stations in June, but they didn’t lose any, either. That leaves the seventh-ranked variety format — which includes stations with three or more distinct formats, either block-programmed or simultaneously — as the only one with a lower station total than in May, off by four.
While religion leads the pack in terms of added stations year-over-year or year-to-date, contemporary Christian and Spanish also show impressive growth both ways. The only other format with added stations in the double digits is classic hits, and the only other one with both-way boosts is classic rock, with single-digit adds from either a year ago or January.
Below the top 10, adult contemporary, hot AC, and alternative rock — ranked 11th, 12th and 13th — are down any way you look at them. Year-over-year the three have shed six, 17, and five stations, respectively, which 2025-to-date they’re down by 13, one, and six outlets.
