Nielsen Places Audio Diary Service On Six-Month Accreditation Hiatus.

Nielsen and the Media Rating Council have agreed to place Nielsen’s audio diary measurement service on an accreditation hiatus, for a six-month period from June 23 through Dec. 23, 2026, according to a letter sent from Nielsen to its audio clients, a copy of which was obtained by Inside Radio.

According to a Nielsen spokesperson, the pause gives the company the time needed to continue its evolution of the diary service, and to more effectively fit respondents’ communications preferences, ensuring the service remains effective and sustainable for years ahead.

The correspondence notes that while Nielsen will continue to use its traditional diary collection format for most of the sample, it will be working on several innovations for other participants, such as using digital tools to improve response rates and demographic targeting, as well as rolling out a new digital survey designed to be competed in just minutes, thereby improving data clarity and growing respondent commitment to providing quality data.

Regarding Nielsen’s spring 2026 launch of its mSurvey as part the audio diary service, the letter tells clients that it expects this innovation to drive higher participation rates, ensure more accurate audience representation, and deliver meaningful improvements in representation and data quality, as it evolves its methods to protect and strengthen local market measurement for the long term.

Nielsen’s spokesperson notes that the hiatus pertains only to the diary service, used for smaller markets, and has no impact on PPM or its clients’ day-to-day ability to transact with Nielsen.

Nielsen says the during the hiatus, it will continue to provide clients and the MRC with regular updates on its progress, as it aims to launch these digital instruments during early 2027.
