
Sports fans will find some new listening options this week, with a new podcast that tells the untold stories of women’s soccer and another that is focused on Formula One racing. There is also an official Wimbledon podcast. Beyond sports, there is a new true crime series that tells the story of the high-profile Hollywood murder of Bonny Lee Bakey. Plus, TheGrio launches a daily show.
Here’s some of what’s new this week in podcasting –
Hustle Rule: The Untold Stories of Women’s Soccer is a new podcast co-produced by iHeartRadio, Waffle Iron Entertainment, Range Media Partners, Observatory and AudioUp Media. The series will take listeners inside the lives of some of the world’s best women’s soccer players who are willing to risk everything for the game they love. It is hosted by actress and singer Hannah Waddingham who takes listeners across the globe and shares inspiring stories of far-flung adventures, heartbreak, endurance and joy. The podcast is based on the book “Under the Lights and in the Dark” by Gwendolyn Oxenham. The podcast also features the anthem track “Won’t Stop,” performed and written exclusively for this podcast by globally renowned music producer and songwriter, A1 LaFlare.
Choosing Sides: F1 is a new podcast from Sports Illustrated and iHeartRadio. While most Americans are more familiar with NASCAR, there are more than a billion Formula 1 fans worldwide. That is due in in part to Netflix's popular “Drive to Survive” series. To appeal to them, Choosing Sides: F1 is launching. It is hosted by writer and cultural commentator Lily Herman and Michael Kosta, a Senior Correspondent on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.”
Herman also writes the popular F1 culture newsletter Engine Failure. And Kosta previously co-hosted Fox Sports 1’s “Crowd Goes Wild” and currently hosts the weekly Tennis Anyone podcast. Choosing Sides: F1 launches June 28 with new episodes every Tuesday.
The Execution of Bonny Lee Bakley is a new true crime series from Wondery. The six-episode podcast is about Bakley, who was found fatally shot in a car on a dark North Hollywood street. The prime suspect was her husband, famed actor Robert Blake. But Bonny, a longtime con artist, had plenty of enemies. She left behind a trail of men she’d scammed, and she had a volatile relationship with Christian Brando, the troubled son of movie star Marlon Brando. The search for Bonny’s killer took detectives on an eleven-month odyssey across the country and through Hollywood's underbelly of hustlers, drug addicts, and would-be hitmen. It would be the most expensive murder investigation in LAPD history to date. TheGrio Daily is a new podcast from TheGrio Black Podcast Network. Hosted by writer and self-proclaimed ‘Wypipologist’ Michael Harriot who will deliver his usual wit, cultural commentary, and humor that fans have come to expect from him. Each new episode will feature his unique ability to mix humor and historical context and will be available on the premier destination for on-the-go listeners seeking access to Black entertainment, news, culture, and content.
Clown Parade: An Anthological Character Piece Carefully Curated by Las Culturistas is a new podcast fromiHeartMedia and Will Ferrell’s Big Money Players Network. The comedy podcast series is presented by Ferrell and Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang of Las Culturistas podcast. Each month, the show will feature four episodes by a different up-and-coming comedic talent, creating a brand new podcast format hosted by an original character of their own creation. The diverse roster of comedians will be curated by Ferrell, Rogers and Yang with an eye towards representation, inclusivity, and elevating the next generation of comedic voices. Ferrell, Rogers and Yang will set up each new comic and their concept, who will then have a four-episode mini series in the podcast feed as their character.
Prop Culture is a new podcast from iHeartRadio built off several NFTs. Described as a “weekly hangout podcast” focused on everything from TV, music, crypto, current events and pop culture. It will also feature the hosts wagering on what unexpected entertainment news will break next, placing outlandish and hilarious bets with one another. The NFTs that iHeart will leverage for the show include Loot Bag #2020 voiced by TV writer, producer and voice actor Matt Harrigan (The Late Show with David Letterman, Celebrity Death Match, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force), Quirkies #1988 voiced by indie movie director and writer Jiyoung Lee, and Quirkies #307 voiced by TV producer and musician Dave Bonawits.
The People’s Court Podcast is a new show that will take episode so the long-running television series to audio. On the podcast, Judge Marilyn Milian dispenses justice and provides legal insight in the courtroom where justice and reality collide. The People’s Court Podcast draws on ordinary people who have filed grievances in civil court and have opted to have their cases heard and mediated by Judge Milian. Running the gamut from disputes between neighbors and family members, to dissatisfied customers suing businesses, Milian's decisions – based on current law – are final and binding. Joining Milian is investigative reporter Harvey Levin, who serves as the series’ host and legal reporter. In the courtroom, Milian is joined by court officer Douglas McIntosh. Doug Llewelyn interviews litigants after a decision has been rendered in their cases.
Project Unabom is a new podcast from Apple TV+. Hosted by journalist Eric Benson, the podcast explores the story of serial bomber Ted Kaczynski and what drove him to his dystopian vision. Produced by Audacy's Pineapple Street Studios, the podcast is executive produced by Pineapple Street cofounders Jenna Weiss-Berman and Max Linsky. The Senior Producer for Pineapple Street is Jonathan Menjivar (“The Clearing”). New episodes of Project Unabom will debut July 27 with new episodes weekly on Mondays.

The show will feature stories about the wide-ranging identities and experiences of members of the Latino community. It is hosted by CPR News host May Ortega. Launching on July 8, ¿Quién Are We? is produced by CPR News and CPR’s Audio Innovations Studio and is the latest in its award-winning podcast lineup. Listeners can expect new episodes every other Friday throughout the summer and into fall.
Weirder Together with Ben Lee and Ione Skye is a new podcast from Acast. It is hosted by iconic Australian musician/producer Ben Lee and actress/painter/director Ione Skye. Redeemed is a new audio drama podcast from the Dorset Theater Festival and the Broadway Podcast Network. The Chisa Husthinson-written two-episode podcast is about a domestic terrorist who killed Claire Yiang’s brother nine years ago writes begging her to visit him in prison. When Claire arrives, the killer claims he’s a changed man - thanks to the help of her brother’s ghost. Now she must decide whether her brother’s murderer is capable of redemption, or just attempting to impress the parole board. The podcast is an exploration of domestic terrorism. Hutchinson worked with Festival director Jade King Carroll to create and produce the podcast.
Nightwatch is a new audio drama podcast from the Dorset Theater Festival and the Broadway Podcast Network Written by Theresa Rebeck, the audio play Nightwatch is an imitative true-crime podcast examining the “facts” around a peculiar incident. A teenage girl witnesses a violent attack in the middle of the street. No one else seemed to see it, and the police failed to investigate. If a murder happens and only one person sees it - and that person is a teenage girl - is it real? But what if a true crime is a fake crime? Public radio reporter Martina Diaz guides listeners through a maze of interviews with friends and skeptics. NIghtwatch is directed by Tony Award nominee, Moritz Von Stuelpnagel.

Produced by Neon Hum, in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment’s Global Podcast Division, the new season is an examination of the true crime genre and our society’s incredible fascination with murder, serial killers and more. Hosted by pop culture journalist Mariah Smith, the 12-part series explores our cultural obsession with true crime.

You Must Remember This has released its full season of the TV & Film series dubbed “Erotic 80s.” The 12-episode season is dedicated to exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood's first century. Created, written, produced and narrated by Karina Longworth, each episode of “Erotic 80s” examines a single year, and one or more films that share a genre, a theme or a star, with topics ranging from the politics of porn, to the first camcorder sex tape scandal, to the sexualization of teens, to Hollywood’s lingering fear of interracial coupling. Longworth says the new season -- “Erotic 90s” -- arrives this fall.
Play On Podcasts presents a new season with a production of the audio drama Twelfth Night. The adaptation of the Shakespeare classic is written by Alison Carey and features actors Amy Brenneman (NYPD Blue; Judging Amy; Private Practice; The Leftovers) and Tramell Tillman (Severance) among others.
"Alison Carey conjured the comedic spirit of Shakespeare in her translation of Twelfth Night. She knows how to tell a joke," said Lue Douthit, President and Creative Director of Play On Shakespeare. “Listen for one of my favorite linguistic inventions: ‘druncle,’ which Alison coined to describe the drunkard Uncle Toby. And there are many more of these clever puns sprinkled throughout.”
The podcast is executive producer by Michael Goodfriend, who says the adaptation “heightens the poignancy in Shakespeare’s story of love, loss, reunion and forgiveness” with a production that is set in a “Hamptons-esque Ilyria during the golden age of radio.”
