The Piano Man is returning to radio with his first new single in nearly 17 years.
iHeartMedia will world-premiere “Turn the Lights Back On,” Billy Joel's first new music for Columbia Records since 2007, over 450 of its CHR, adult contemporary, hot AC, classic rock, classic hits, and news/talk stations nationwide today at 7am local time.
Leading into the song's premiere, iHeart stations will air exclusive interviews with Joel and “Lights” producer and co-writer Freddy Wexler, sharing how the new song came together with hosts Elvis Duran, Ryan Seacrest, Jim Kerr, Ellen K, Martha Quinn, and Cubby and Cristine.
Following the world premiere, iHeart's hot AC and classic rock stations will continue to highlight the song throughout the day, with AC, classic hits and oldies stations airing it hourly.
Over more than five decades of recording, Joel has sold more than 160 million albums worldwide, along the way winning six Grammy awards, earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, and receiving the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013. Since January 2014, he has played one live show every month at New York's Madison Square Garden, with his residency scheduled to end with his final show there Jul. 25.
Joel topped Billboard's Hot 100 chart three times, with “It's Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “Tell Her About It,” and “We Didn't Start the Fire,” the latter updated with new lyrics by the band Fall Out Boy last year. He also scored four No. 1 albums with “52nd Street,” “Glass Houses,” “Storm Front,” and “River of Dreams,” his last full pop album of new material in 1993. Joel's last new songs came in 2007, with the single “All My Life” for Columbia, and “Christmas in Fallujah” which he wrote for singer Cass Dillon.
“Turn the Lights Back On,” released through Sony Music Entertainment's Columbia Records, was written by Joel and Wexler, along with Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector. Wexler, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer, has contributed to 10 Billboard chart toppers for artists such as Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Blackpink, Jonas Brothers, Pink, Selena Gomez, and Celine Dion.
