Hollywood Gets Behind New Podcast That Tells Little-Known Story Behind Roe Abortion Case.

As the U.S. Supreme Court wraps up its session in the coming days with expected decisions on several controversial cases, a new series is debuting that will capitalize on the public interest in the judicial branch. The new iHeartPodcast-produced series will touch on the Court’s ruling a year ago that rolled back abortion rights. But rather wade into the politics, Supreme: The Battle for Roe is a scripted podcast that delves into the true story of the historic Roe v. Wade case.

The nine-episode series follows the journey of the youngest woman ever to argue a case in the Supreme Court. Created and written by Aaron Tracy, the production brings to life the extraordinary tale of a 26-year-old attorney, Sarah Weddington, as she steps into a courtroom and argues the defining case of her era. Before Roe V. Wade, Tracy says Weddington had never worked on a contested case or even been inside a courtroom and Justice Harry Blackmun had never authored a major opinion.

“They were both new, untested, and the least likely vehicles for the abortion controversy you can imagine. But their collision at the Supreme Court ended up defining their entire lives, and changed the course of history,” said Tracy. “The moment I stumbled onto the story I was desperate to write it. I'm thrilled it's now come to life with such brilliant collaborators, and I can't wait for people to hear this incredible story on iHeart.”

Supreme: The Battle for Roe has heavy Hollywood involvement. The podcast is directed by Rachel Winter who earlier earned an Oscars nomination for her work as producer of the film “Dallas Buyers Club” that told a fictionalized accounting of a little-known story about the early days of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.

The producer roster also includes movie producer and actress and podcaster Eva Longoria. Tracy is also holding producer credits for the show.

"Supreme has brought together an incredible ensemble cast of accomplished actors from television, film and stage, and from multiple generations,” Winter said. “These actors boarded the project based on the subject matter and Aaron’s compelling and wholly entertaining script. iHeart listeners will be both informed and entertained throughout the nine episodes.”

The cast for the podcast includes a list of well-known actors including Maya Hawke (Sarah Weddington), William H. Macy (Justice Harry Blackmun), Abigail Breslin (Linda Coffee), Andrea Savage (Deb Margulies), Felicity Huffman (Dottie Blackmun), Laura Benanti (Bea Cuttriss), Garrett Hedlund (Ron Weddington), Josh Hamilton (Reverend Herbert Ragle), Luke Kirby (Roy Lucas) and William Fichtner (Chief Justice Warren Burger).

“I am honored to be a part of this project, alongside such a talented cast and creative team, to share Sarah Weddington’s story of remarkable courage and determination,” Hawke said. “This podcast will shed light on an important, but largely unknown figure in history, and bring her inspiring legacy to life for a new generation.”

Supreme: The Battle for Roe is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and will be available on all major podcast listening platforms beginning June 28 with new episodes available weekly on Wednesdays.

“It’s a gripping and inspiring story, coupled with an exceptional cast and creative team, and is a testament to the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on shaping our understanding of pivotal moments in history,” said Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts. “It showcases our commitment to delivering top-quality, thought-provoking content to our listeners and we look forward to sharing it with our audiences everywhere.”
