Election News And Hype Power News/Talkers To Top Ranking Positions.


Continuing an ongoing trend, news/talk stations claim the top ratings spot in Portland, San Antonio, Sacramento and Salt Lake City in the November 2020 PPMs, which cover the weeks just ahead of the 2020 elections. Meanwhile, WRFX remains in first in Charlotte, as does WDVE in Pittsburgh, WOCL in Orlando and KKLZ Las Vegas.


Oregon Public Radio KOPB-AM/FM reclaims the top-ranking position in Portland, OR, rising 8.4-7.6-8.3. iHeartMedia AC KKCW (7.8-8.4-8.2) slides from first to second, while Alpha Media news/talk KXL-FM (6.0-7.0-7.0) remains in third.


iHeartMedia classic rock WRFX (6.6-7.9-7.5) keeps its perch in Charlotte, while country sister WKKT adds a share (6.4-6.4-7.4) to move into a second-place tie with Entercom news/talk WBT-AM/FM, which is up 6.0-6.9-7.4, capitalizing on the news cycle ahead of the 2020 elections. Last month’s No. 2 ranker, Beasley Media Group country WSOC drops to fourth (7.4-7.3-7.3).


In San Antonio, iHeartMedia news/talk WOAI (6.1-6.3-7.7) moves into a first-place tie with Cox Media Group classic hits KONO-FM (6.3-8.1-7.7). Moving up a rank to third is Univision regional Mexican KROM (5.4-5.5-6.3).


In Sacramento, iHeartMedia news/talk KFBK-AM/FM breaks a nine-share (8.1-8.5-9.1) to stay top-of-the-heap, followed again in the November 2020 PPM survey by Bonneville country KNCI (7.7-7.5-8.1) and Entercom classic rock KSEG (7.9-7.2-7.7).


After rising to the top of the Salt Lake City market for the first time ever in October, iHeartMedia talk KNRS-AM/FM adds nearly two shares and remains in first (7.3-7.6-9.5) and posts new high-water mark for its largest share in station history. Bonneville’s news/talk KSL-AM/FM stays in second (6.1-7.4-7.2) and is followed again this month by soft AC sister KSFI (5.9-6.9-6.7).


After celebrating its centennial anniversary in October, Entercom news/talk KDKA added half-a-share month-over-month (5.1-4.8-5.4), rising to fourth in Pittsburgh. The top three ranked stations remain unchanged: iHeartMedia rock WDVE (10.3-10.6-11.3); classic hits sister WWSW-FM (9.0-9.5-9.0); and Steel City Media adult hits WRRK (7.7-6.8-7.8).


After posting its largest share in station history in October, Entercom classic hits WOCL moves 9.4-11.1-10.3 and retains first place in Orlando. iHeartMedia AC WMGF (6.5-7.7-8.3) hangs onto second, while CHR sister WXXL moves from fifth to third (5.2-5.7-6.8).


Beasley Media Group classic hits KKLZ (6.1-7.3-6.1) keeps the pole position in Las Vegas for the second straight month, followed again by iHeartMedia AC KSNE-FM (7.3-6.8-5.6). Lotus Communications Spanish classic hits KWID (3.8-4.6-5.3) moves up a rank to third.


Taking a look at the news/talk trend in a few other recently released PPM markets: Emmis talk WIBC (9.1-9.2-10.9) is ranked first in Indianapolis; Cox Media Group news/talk WOKV-AM/FM (10.2-10.7-11.7) is on top in Jacksonville; iHeartMedia talk WISN (10.2-11.2-12.7) takes first in Milwaukee; Austin news/takers, University of Texas’ KUT (10.1-10.2-9.6) and Sinclair Telecable KLBJ (5.5-6.0-6.1) are ranked second and third respectively; in Raleigh-Durham, iHeartMedia talk WTKK (7.0-7.7-8.5) and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill news/talk WUNC (8.1-7.0-8.3) are second and third, respectively; and iHeartMedia news/talk WTIC adds a share (7.3-7.8-8.5) and is ranked second in Hartford.


Nielsen’s November 2020 PPM survey covers the period from Oct. 8-Nov. 4. All shares quoted are Persons 6+, Mon-Sun 6am-Mid.
