Edison: Radio Dominates Despite CarPlay, Android Auto.

Edison says the latest data from its Share of Ear shows that AM/FM radio continues to be a core component of Americans’ daily audio consumption in 2025 — especially when it comes to time spent listening in the car.

Among Americans aged 13+, traditional radio still claims the largest share of in-car audio time, particularly among those whose primary vehicles don’t feature Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Although radio remains the top in-car audio source across many audience segments, the introduction and increasing presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are beginning to make inroads.

The in-car audio landscape has shifted significantly as more vehicles are equipped with these smart dashboard technologies. Edison says that as of Q2 2025, just over one-third of Americans 13+ report having Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in their primary vehicle. These platforms are not only becoming more common — they’re also deeply influencing users’ daily audio habits. In fact, recent findings show that 83% of Americans 18+ who have access to these systems actively use them.

Even among CarPlay and Android Auto users, radio remains the top audio source in the car, commanding 47% of listening time. However, streaming audio and SiriusXM Radio are gaining ground, with each capturing 20% of in-car audio time among users of these connected platforms.

One interesting insight from the data is the relatively stable and modest share of time spent listening to podcasts — regardless of whether a listener has access to CarPlay or Android Auto. While digital platforms gain more listening time overall with the adoption of these technologies, podcast listening remains steady across both groups.
