Could Android Auto Be (Finally) Integrating Existing Car Radio Controls?

There are indications, based on references made in the code of recent versions of Google’s Android Auto, that the platform may be working on an update that enhances its media capabilities by bringing in the controls of any car’s built-in radio.

According to a report in Phone Arena, Google’s upgrade would for the first time offer all in-car radio stations and the consumer’s mobile phone media in a one-stop shop. Currently, Android Auto mainly supports smartphone apps for music and podcasts.

Clearly, such an upgrade would make switching from one audio choice — including AM/FM stations — to another while driving less cumbersome, not to mention less dangerous. The new feature would eliminate multiple players by adding direct control of the car’s radio within Android Auto.

From a technical standpoint, it is still unclear how Google would make this work, as in whether it would be a dedicated app within Android Auto or a simple shortcut to a car’s radio interface, and whether it will require software updates from car manufacturers to work.
