Comedy Continues As Most Listened-To Genre Says Edison; While History Moves Into Top 10.

Podcast listeners remain on the hunt for a good laugh as Edison Research’s quarterly analysis of the top genres shows Comedy continues to have the most listeners. The bigger surprise could be that despite the fall election season, the News genre lost ground. It slid back to third place as the all-encompassing Society & Culture genre moved up one spot to No. 2 during the third quarter of 2022 among listeners aged 18 and older.

True Crime remained at No. 4, followed by Business, Sports and Arts – each where they were in the prior report. The quarter-to-quarter movement came in the second half of the top ten. Edison Podcast Metrics shows History moved into the top ten, finishing at No. 8, up three from the prior quarter. The Religion & Spirituality and Education genres swapped places from Q2 2022. Edison uses the podcast genre classifications used by Apple Podcasts for its analysis.

Edison Research earlier released its listing of the top 50 podcasts during the third quarter. The Joe Rogan Experience held its now familiar place at the lead of Edison’s ranking, which, unlike other listings, is based on survey recall data. Rogan was followed by Crime Junkie, The Daily, This American Life, The Ben Shapiro Show, Stuff You Should Know, My Favorite Murder, Morbid: A True Crime Podcast, Dateline NBC, and Office Ladies.
