Charlamagne Tha God Goes Back To Where It All Began.

Charlamagne Tha God, co-host of The Premiere Networks nationally syndicated daily radio show “The Breakfast Club,” is revisiting some of the highest points of his radio career in a conversation released with iHeartMedia.

The South Carolina native began his 27-year career in radio in the promotions department for urban contemporary “Z93 Jamz” WWWZ in Charleston, SC, now owned by Cumulus Media. It was there he hopped on the air with Program Director Willy Will, who offered the young Lenard McKelvey his first voice-tracked slot of Sunday mornings before moving to Saturday nights.

“I absolutely, positively remember that feeling of first going live on the radio on a Saturday night at 10pm,” the 47-year-old Charlamagne recalls. “There was nothing like it. The phone lines ringing. You’re taking phone calls. You know, just feeling like you’re really one with the city of Charleston.”

Charlamagne — radio host, podcaster and author — hesitates to identify a career apex, primarily because high points are simply the byproduct of a job well done.

“One thing that I’ve learned from being the host of a nationally syndicated radio show is if you’re consistently good at what you do — you consistently grow and evolve the show — there really is no high point, because the high points keep coming,” he explains. “I thought being in the Radio Hall of Fame would have been a high point. But being in the Radio Hall of Fame doesn’t necessarily feel as great as doing a phenomenal interview with somebody that you may have never thought you was going to do an interview with. So, I don’t think there is a high point.”

Since leaving the “Wendy Williams Experience” in 2006, Charlamagne has appeared on multiple TV series from MTV2’s “Guy Code” to “Uncommon Sense.” He began hosting The Breakfast Club with DJ Envy and Angela Yee in 2010.

Charlamagne has spent the past 15 years shocking the masses with his “Donkey of the Day” segment and stirring up viral conversations within the Hip-Hop/R&B space. His commentary on cultural issues and interviews with artists, politicians and other public figures earned him numerous awards and landed him on numerous lists within the media industry.

In 2017, Charlamagne released his first self-help book, Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It. He’s released two additional books, Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me (2018) and Get Honest Or Die Lying: Why Small Talk Sucks (2024).

In 2020, Charlamagne teamed with iHeartMedia to launch the Black Effect Podcast Network. That same year, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame with DJ Envy and Angela Yee.
