The dog days of summer are never a particularly active time for releasing new shows, and that held true last month. The podcast search engine Listen Notes says 10,723 new shows were detected worldwide in August. That is 40% fewer than the number of debuts a year earlier. August also delivered the fewest number of new shows of any month so far this year, with a 12% drop in debuts between July and August. Overall this year, Listen Notes says 125,325 new podcasts were been released worldwide in the first eight months of 2024.
There may be fewer launches, but the pivot to more always-on shows mean podcast listeners have plenty of fresh content. Listen Notes says 18.2 million new episodes have been published so far in 2024, which compares to 29.6 million for all of 2023.
In another sign of industry health, the number of active shows totals nearly 603,000. That compares to 280,000 active shows in 2023. Listen Notes considers a show to be active if the latest episode of a podcast is in that year.
The autumn months are typically active for new show launches. Ahead of that, Listen Notes’ latest numbers show the there are at least 3.4 million podcasts in its database. It has also logged nearly 205,637,399 episodes in the world.
