After sitting out most of the year, United Healthcare returned to the airwaves in September. Now it has carved out a position in radio’s top 10 advertisers for the week of Oct 11-17 with 30,037 spot occurrences on stations tracked by Media Monitors. The last time the health insurance provider appeared in the top 10 was the week of Nov. 9-15, 2020.
United Healthcare, part of industry giant United Health Group, covers more than 48 million people mostly in the U.S., according to the Associated Press. It’s one of five insurance brands on the air in the latest top 100 chart, led by State Farm at No. 7. The list also includes radio stalwarts GEICO at No. 15, Progressive at No. 17 and Allstate at No. 29.
Convenience Store Circle K, meanwhile, has dramatically upped its radio allocation during the past few weeks. It ran 29,839 spots on the chart, consistent with the prior week’s No. 9 showing with 29,825. But these totals mark a dramatic increase from what the convenience store/gas retailer was doing in 2020 and 2019 when it was more likely to be found in the middle or bottom quarter of the 100-position spot count chart.
This comes as 2021 is shaping up to be a strong sales year for convenience store retailers. Nearly three-quarters (74%) of these retailers expect 2021 year-end in-store sales to outpace 2020 and 67% anticipate sales will exceed 2019 levels. That’s according to a NACS retailer member survey conducted in September 2021, as reported by Chain Store Age. Only 11% of convenience store retailers expect their 2021 sales to fall below year-end 2020 sales and only 13% said sales will be lower than 2019. Apart from Circle K, Speedway (at No. 95 with 6,626 spot detections) is the only other convenience store on the latest chart.
Medical Equipment & Supplies has developed into a major category for radio, boasting four entries led by Exergen at No. 16, Cologuard at No. 51, Naväge at No. 55, and QC Kenetix at No. 55.
For the week of Oct 11-17, 2021, the top 10 on the Media Monitors tally are iHeartRadio at 1, Indeed at 2, DuckDuckGo at 3, Upside Services at 4, the iHeart podcast “Queen of the Con: The Irish Heiress” at 5, Vicks at 6, State Farm at 7, United Healthcare at 8, Circle K at 9 and Capital One at 10.
