Triton Says iHeart Holds First Place On Its U.S. Ranker In August.

The iHeartPodcast Audience Network remained at the front of the pack in August, according to Triton Digital, which says the sales network had 69.3 million average weekly downloads last month and 19.2 million average weekly users for its network of more than 500 shows. Both metrics were up on a month-over-month basis. The iHeart Audience Network includes not only shows published by iHeartPodcasts, but other publishers’ shows that it sells advertising for.

Triton says the SiriusXM Podcast Network remained in second place with 14.3 million average weekly users and 42.7 million average weekly downloads. It too had increases in both metrics last month.

NPR, which has had to split third place with Wondery in recent months, now holds onto third by itself. NPR had 26.6 million average weekly downloads and 6.9 million average weekly users. Now fourth, Wondery had 18 million average weekly downloads, and 6 million average weekly users. Audioboom rounds out the top five with 13.5 average weekly downloads and 5.3 million average weekly users.

The other movement in the top ten came on the ranker of average weekly users. The Cumulus Podcast Network pulled ahead of the NBCUniversal News Group, outgunning the latter with 81,153 more average weekly users — 3,090,079 vs. 3,008,926. But NBCU held onto the lead in terms of average weekly downloads by a 9.2 to 8.0 margin.

Triton says during August the top three podcasts based on downloads included NPR News Now, which again ranked No. 1 among the publishers it measures, followed by NPR’s Up First and Audiochuck’s Crime Junkie, which overtook NBCUniversal News Group’s Dateline NBC, which had been in third place in July.

For listeners, the top three podcasts in August based on the publishers measured by Triton included NPR News Now, again at No.1, followed by Crime Junkie, and NPR’s Up First in third place. It was the same as a month earlier.

Triton Digital says there were several debuts for the month of August, including iHeart’s FantasyPros — Fantasy Football, Wondery’s Hysterical, and Wavland/SiriusXM’s Noble debuting based on downloads and listeners.
