TelevisaUnivision reported a sharp decline in U.S. advertising revenue during the second quarter as rival NBCUniversal’s Telemundo held the Spanish-language U.S. media rights to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, changing the competitive sports environment for Spanish-language broadcasters.

The company said U.S. advertising revenue fell 29% during the quarter, contributing to an 11% decline in total U.S. revenue, which totaled $722 million. The year-ago comparison was also impacted by strong results from major soccer events, including the Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup tournaments held in the U.S.

TelevisaUnivision, which owns or operates 35 U.S. radio stations as part of its Uforia Audio Network, does not disclose financial results for its radio or audio operations.

“While cyclical headwinds in the U.S. advertising persist in the third quarter, reflecting broader macroeconomic trends and a competitive sports calendar on competitor networks, our underlying business remains solid,” Daniel Alegre, CEO of TelevisaUnivision, told analysts during a conference call.

Alegre said the company expects third-quarter U.S. advertising results to be “consistent with the second quarter trend.” TelevisaUnivision is looking to political advertising tied to the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, particularly campaigns targeting Hispanic voters, to help offset weakness in the broader advertising market.

“We know the Hispanic vote will be determinate” during the U.S. midterm elections,” Alegre said, adding that many Hispanic voters have not yet made their decisions on candidates. He said that creates a significant opportunity for TelevisaUnivision as political spending increases ahead of the November elections.

While the U.S. advertising business declined, TelevisaUnivision reported stronger results in Mexico, where advertising revenue increased 23% to $353 million. The company credited the growth to the performance of 104 FIFA World Cup matches streamed on its ViX platform.

Overall, TelevisaUnivision reported second-quarter revenue of $1.3 billion, up 10% year over year. The company said growth was driven by a 53% increase in Mexico revenue following a strong FIFA World Cup performance that reached 675 million total viewers across linear television and ViX.

Despite higher revenue, operating income declined to $224 million from $241 million a year earlier. Adjusted OIBDA fell to $388 million from $398 million.

Subscription and licensing revenue increased 40% to $621 million, helped by approximately $90 million in revenue from sublicensing FIFA World Cup rights in other Spanish-speaking Latin American markets, growth in ViX’s premium subscription tier and higher linear distribution revenue.

In the U.S., subscription and licensing revenue rose 8% to $377 million, driven by growth in ViX premium subscriptions, the company’s partnership with Hulu Live TV and higher average rates.
