Looks like Taylor Swift is going to need another room for all those awards.
The Recording Industry Association of America's annual year-end review of certified albums and singles shows Swift leading RIAA's top albums for 2024 with “The Tortured Poets Department,” which, certified at 6 times platinum or 6 million units sold, is the highest certification level for any album or single this year.
According to RIAA's year-end tally, 16 albums and 69 singles released between Dec. 1, 2023 and Nov. 30, 2024 received RIAA certifications. Reflecting another big year on contemporary radio, Billie Eilish earned the most certified titles in 2024 with 10, including 4x-platinum single “Birds of a Feather” and platinum singles “Lunch,” “Chiriro,” and “Wildflower,” all from her RIAA-certified platinum album “Hit Me Hard and Soft.”
RIAA's report shows 65 artists having received their first gold or platinum certification in the past year, including Shaboozey for his multi-format hit single “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which was first certified just 31 days after its release and has reached 5x-platinum status to date.
Other radio-active acts getting their first certs this year include Benson Boone for his single “Beautiful Things” (also 5x platinum), Tommy Richman with the year's highest hip-hop certification at 4x platinum for single “Million Dollar Baby,” Teddy Swims for 2x-platinum single “Lose Control,” and Chappell Roan with two multiplatinum singles: 3x-platinum “Good Luck, Babe!” and 2x-platinum “Hot 2 Go!”
“Celebrating the cultural and commercial impact of music in the US since 1958, the Recording Industry Association of America recognizes artists whose creativity connects with generations of fans in more ways than ever before and reaches significant streaming and sales thresholds,” the RIAA's news release says.
Other platinum-mining artists this past year who also hit the jackpot at radio include: Sabrina Carpenter with multiplatinum singles “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste,” all from her multiplatinum album “Short N' Sweet”; Post Malone for the 5x-platinum hit “I Had Some Help” featuring Morgan Wallen; Hozier's “Too Sweet” and Doja Cat's “Agora Hills,” both 4x platinum; and Tate McRae 3x-platinum “Greedy.”
“RIAA has the honor of recognizing artists and their dedicated label teams for these amazing sales and streaming achievements,” RIAA President and COO Michele Ballantyne says. “We are excited to acknowledge the titles certified in 2024 and highlight these shining moments as the year wraps.”
For RIAA's certifications, sales of albums include on-demand audio and/or video streams, calculated at the formula of 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video streams equaling 10 track sales or 1 album sale. For singles, both downloads and on-demand audio and/or video single streams are counted towards the required thresholds, with 150 on-demand streams equivalent to one download sale.
