RSS has analyzed Google Trends data from the past 12 months to determine the top-trending celebrity- and athlete-hosted podcasts in every U.S. state. The results show regional differences in podcast popularity.
Among the celebrity podcasts, SmartLess was the top-trending show in eight states. The analysis finds the series hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett outperformed in the Midwest and West. Red Table Talk also was the top-trending show in eight states, but the Jada Pinkett Smith-hosted series had its best showing in the South. And Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast also came out on top in eight states, with its best showing in the West.
RSS says its review finds that other big entertainment shows include Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and Armchair Expert, both of which were the top show in five states — but neither had any specific geographic tilt in their fandom.
Among the athlete-hosted podcasts, Club Shay Shay was the clear winner based on the Google Trends data from the past 12 months. It was the top trending athlete-hosted podcast in 14 states, with its strongest showing in the South. That is no surprise considering host and former NFL star Shannon Sharpe played high school and college football in Georgia.
Hockey series Spittin’ Chiclets ranked second, as it was the most searched in 10 states. Hosted by former NHL players Paul Bissonnette and Ryan Whitney, the best results were in the Northeast for this show.
New Heights, hosted by NFL stars and brothers Jason and Travis Kelce, was the most searched in seven states. It outperforms in the Midwest, including Kansas and Missouri — no surprise since Travis Kelce plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.
RSS says All the Smoke ranks fourth among the most-searched athlete-hosted series.
Hosted by former NBA stars Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, it ranks first in six states, several of which, RSS notes, are known for their historic basketball connections.
“While podcast preferences vary by region, a few shows stood out as national favorites, piquing the interest of residents in multiple states,” RSS says in a blog post. “The data shows that regional trends play a big role in which podcasts resonate most with audiences, whether led by a celebrity we already know or a host that we’ll get to know the more we listen.”
