A Durango, CO radio station has gone to the dogs. Hutton Broadcasting has scrapped CHR “99X” KKDG Durango in favor of “99.7 Doggy FM,” complete with a Snoop Dogg sound-alike station voice and a mix of dog-themed titles such as “Shannon” by Henry Gross, “Rover” by Jethro Tull, “Roll Over Beethoven” by Chuck Berry, “Rain Dogs” by Tom Waits, and “Old King” by Neil Young.
The station includes the “Benji & Toto Morning Show” — short segments of two dogs barking, public service messages from the likes of “Mailman Bob,” segments about pet care, and a weather report highlighting “trails to walk with your human” to see fall foliage, and a reminder that “leash laws are still in effect.”
“Durango loves their dogs. We believe that dogs deserve to enjoy the same level of entertainment and enrichment as humans,” GM Jack Llewellyn said. “By creating a station specifically for them, we hope to provide a valuable resource that enhances their quality of life.”
While it’s likely that “Doggy FM” will eventually cross the rainbow bridge and a new format is adopted for the signal, the presentation is being well executed.
