Road Dogs: Core Radio Listeners/Concert-Goers Will Trek 200+ Miles For A Show.

The Jacobs Media Techsurvey results will be presented tomorrow (April 25) during a free webinar in partnership with Inside Radio and sponsored by Quu.

This year’s study yielded over 31,000 surveys among core radio listeners from 500 participating U.S. and Canadian stations. The annual Techsurvey explores broadcast radio’s role in the expanding, and increasingly crowded, digital, audio, and video landscape.

The annual Techsurvey confirms that the live music industry, a crucial partner to the radio industry, enjoyed a record 2023, with nearly one in four concert-goers saying they traveled more than 200+ miles (each way) to attend a live music performance.

Overall, 22% of live music concert attendees in 2023 say they journeyed 200+ miles (one way) to take in a show. In 2023, 16% of core radio listeners/concert-goers traveled 200+ miles for one concert. Additionally, 6% said they’ve traveled this distance for more than two concerts in 2023.

Progressively younger music fans are increasingly more likely to have traveled a great distance to see a favorite artist or group in concert. Members of Gen Z are most likely to hit the road to see a band, with 32% saying they’ve traveled 200 miles or more (one-way) to attend a live music concert in 2023. Millennials (27%) were next to gas up, followed by Gen X (24%) and Boomers (18%).

“For many music concert devotees in 2023, money – and distance – may have not been big major impediments to attending,” Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs said in a release. “The fact nearly one-fourth of concert attendees took a 200+ mile trip each way to enjoy artists like Taylor Swift and the Rolling Stones makes a statement about both the shape of the economy and music lovers’ desire to get out post-pandemic and take in live concerts.”

The Techsurvey webinar will also provide deeper insight into how radio listeners feel about AI, respondents’ thoughts on interacting with radio hosts and personalities, how QR codes can help with marketing and promotions, and the current pulse of how core radio listeners feel about subscription fees for media content.
