Entercom classic hits “K-Earth” KRTH achieved its largest share in station history while continuing to lead the Los Angeles market in Day One of the July 2020 PPM ratings released Monday by Nielsen. Rising 5.6-5.7-6.1, ratings historian Chris Huff says it’s the highest total audience share for K-Earth in L.A. ratings history. Moving from fourth to second is iHeartMedia talk KFI (4.6-4.4-4.7), followed by AC sister KOST, which drops a rank, trending 4.2-5.1-4.6. Up a spot is Entercom rhythmic AC KTWV (4.3-4.1-4.6), followed by iHeartMedia hot AC KBIG (4.5-4.9-4.4) to round out the Top 5.
Coming off its highest share in station history, iHeartMedia classic rock WAXQ loses half a share but remains locked in fourth in New York (4.9-5.7-5.2). Traditionally, the classic rock and classic hits formats see a rise in warm weather months, with one of the two crowned the Format of the Summer. Doing its part to keep the title within the formats is Entercom classic hits WCBS-FM (5.8-6.6-6.2), which remains in second place in the Big Apple, behind Spanish Broadcasting System tropical WSKQ-FM, which added more than a share month-over-month (8.7-6.6-7.9). iHeartMedia AC WLTW is up slightly (5.7-5.9-6.1) to remain in third and Emmis/Mediaco adult R&B WBLS keeps the New York Top 5 unchanged month-over-month, flat at a 5.1.
The top three rankers in market number three remain the same with Entercom news WBBM leading Chicago (7.0-6.9-7.0), followed by Hubbard classic rock WDRV (6.4-6.4-6.0) and iHeartMedia adult R&B WVAZ (5.2-5.6-5.7). Hubbard hot AC WTMX, which was outside the Top 5 in June, climbs to fourth (4.9-4.8-5.2). Taking fifth for July is iHeartMedia AC WLIT (5.2-5.5-5.0).
San Francisco sees little movement within the Top 5 as Entercom news stays on top (8.5-8.9-8.3), followed by public radio news/talk outlet KQED (8.7-7.8-7.4). iHeartMedia soft AC KISQ (5.2-4.6-4.4) and hip-hop/R&B sister KMEL (3.9-4.7-4.3) swap positions, while Cumulus Media classic rock KSAN (3.9-3.9-3.8) remains in fifth.
There’s a new market leader in Dallas as iHeartMedia CHR KHKS moves 6.6-5.9-6.2 and swaps rank position with Salem Media Group contemporary Christian KLTY (6.0-6.1-5.6). Cumulus Media country KSCS jumps from sixth to third (4.4-4.5-5.1), while Entercom classic hits KLUV (5.0-4.7-4.8) remains in fourth and iHeartMedia hot AC KDMX stays put in fifth (3.9-4.6-4.4). Outside of the Top 5, but posting its largest share since Winter 2006, Huff notes, is iHeartMedia rock KEGL (3.7-3.5-4.1).
Remaining in first in Houston for the second consecutive month is iHeartMedia AC KODA, although flat (6.2-7.1-71.) Univision regional Mexican KLTN (7.0-6.7-6.5) moves from third to second, trading ranks with Cox Media Group classic rock KGLK (7.0-6.9-6.4). Moving from sixth to fourth is iHeartMedia modern rock KTBZ-FM (5.0-5.4-5.8). Dropping down a spot to round out the Top 5 is iHeartMedia news/talk KRTH (6.0-6.3-5.6).
The Atlanta Top 5 remains unchanged: Cox Media Group news/talk WSB-WSBB-FM (11.1-10.4-10.6) is first followed by classic hits sister WSRV (8.0-7.9-7.9); adult R&B sister WALR-FM (8.4-7.0-6.9); Entercom hip-hop/R&B WVEE (6.9-6.6-6.3); and Urban One adult R&B WAMJ (4.7-4.6-4.8).
Entercom AC WBEB adds two shares to make its way back into the Top 5 in July. The station gains 3.0-4.3-6.3 and takes third in the Philadelphia market. iHeartMedia adult R&B WDAS-FM remains out front (8.9-9.1-8.9), followed by Beasley Media Group rock WMMR (7.3-6.5-6.7), which is up a rank. Last month’s No. 2, classic rock sister WMGK drops to fourth (8.0-6.8-6.1) and taking fifth in Philly is Entercom news KYW (5.8-6.1-5.7).
