Podcast advertising spending surged to a new 2026 high in September, with the top 15 advertisers investing a combined $72.1 million, according to Magellan AI estimates. That’s a jump of more than 16% from August’s $61.9 million total, the year’s previous high. The September increase was especially broad-based, with 14 of the 15 biggest advertisers boosting spending month-to-month.

The September results mark a notable acceleration after months of relatively consistent spending. During the first half of 2026, monthly spending by the top 15 advertisers remained close to $60 million. August brought a rebound, but September’s $72.1 million total represents a much larger increase heading into the pivotal fourth-quarter sales period.

Quince continued its run as podcasting’s biggest advertiser, increasing its September investment to a new high of $8.1 million. BetterHelp ranked second at $6.1 million, followed by T-Mobile at $5.7 million and Toyota at $5.6 million. DraftKings rounded out the top five at $5.6 million, reflecting a sharp increase in spending as the NFL season got underway.

Technology companies also played a significant role in September’s spending surge. Google increased its podcast investment to $5.5 million, while OpenAI climbed into seventh place with $5.3 million. That followed OpenAI’s dramatic August expansion, when its spending jumped from just $174,200 in July to $4.8 million. The latest figures suggest the company’s aggressive move into podcast advertising continued into September.

Amazon remained among the biggest buyers despite being the only top 15 advertiser to reduce spending month-to-month. It ranked eighth at $5.3 million as it geared up for another Prime Day event.

Sports podcasts continued to dominate the buying strategies of major advertisers, serving as the primary genre for nine of the top 15 brands. But the September rankings also showed continued interest in other programming categories. Quince, BetterHelp, and Squarespace focused most heavily on comedy, while SimpliSafe, Wayfair, and Shopify favored news podcasts. Uber stood apart from the rest, with Health & Fitness as its leading genre.

Based on Magellan AI estimates, the monthly top 15 advertisers spent roughly $552 million through the first nine months of the year. The figures — which include a variety of brands and categories — suggest podcast advertising entered the final quarter with stronger momentum among its largest buyers.

While spending among podcasting’s biggest advertisers accelerated in September, Magellan AI’s movers and shakers rankings showed a different trend. The top 15 fastest-growing advertisers spent a combined $7.4 million, down from the $11.2 million spend in August by the up-and-comers.

Hilton led September’s movers and shakers with $1.5 million in spending, a dramatic increase from just $2,000 in August. The hotel company’s expansion put it well ahead of the other advertisers that made the biggest month-to-month increases.

Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk ranked second with nearly $1 million, up 400% from August. QVC followed with $715,700 after reporting no spending the prior month, while Total Wine & More increased its investment to $629,300. Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship rounded out the top five at $463,400 after recording no spending in August.

The September list also highlighted the broad range of advertisers rapidly expanding their podcast campaigns. The rankings show that even as established advertisers are committing more money to podcasting, a diverse mix of other brands continues to expand its presence. Travel, healthcare, financial services, consumer goods, and entertainment advertisers all appeared among the month’s fastest-growing buyers.

September’s tally brings combined spending by advertisers appearing on Magellan’s monthly movers and shakers lists to approximately $119 million during the first nine months of 2026. While the monthly totals have fluctuated considerably, the rankings continue to highlight brands looking to establish or expand their podcast ad campaigns.

Magellan AI’s rankings are based on advertising activity detected across the top 3,000 podcasts in the U.S. The company uses a proprietary modeling system to estimate advertiser spending, incorporating factors such as ad load, episode downloads, CPM estimates, ad formats, network revenue data, and brand share-of-voice across individual shows.
