Podcast Ad Market Resets After Q4 Surge, But Core Advertisers Hold Strong.

Podcast advertising cooled in January after December’s holiday surge, with the top 15 advertisers spending a combined $59.8 million, down from $75.9 million in December, a 21% month-to-month decline, according to Magellan AI estimates.

Despite the pullback, several major brands maintained strong podcast investments.

Magellan AI estimates T-Mobile led all podcast advertisers in January, spending $5.9 million, followed by BetterHelp at $5.6 million and apparel brand Quince at $5.2 million. Sports betting operator FanDuel ranked fourth with $5.2 million, while Rocket Companies placed fifth at $4.5 million, standing out for its focus on science podcasts rather than the sports-heavy strategies of most competitors.

E-commerce and retail brands remained deeply invested in podcasting. Shopify spent $4.3 million, while TJX Companies reached $4 million, reflecting continued interest from consumer brands seeking broad reach and engagement. Automotive advertiser Toyota also remained active, spending $3.7 million, alongside Amazon, which invested a similar amount.

Financial services, telecom, and tech advertisers rounded out the leaderboard. Sports betting platform DraftKings spent $3.7 million, while investing platform Public.com spent $3.3 million. Intuit, LinkedIn, and telecom giant Verizon each invested between $2.6 million and $2.9 million, with insurer Progressive completing the top 15 at $2.4 million.

As in prior months, sports podcasts dominated advertiser preferences, serving as the primary genre for the majority of top spenders, reflecting the format’s ability to deliver scale and predictable reach. Comedy and news podcasts continued to attract select brands such as BetterHelp, Quince, and Shopify, demonstrating that advertisers are balancing reach-driven buys with targeted engagement strategies.

Podcast advertising’s fastest-growing advertisers, or what Magellan calls the “movers and shakers,” spent a combined $15.4 million, essentially flat vs. the $15.5 million total in December. The figures show continued momentum from brands scaling podcast campaigns even after the holiday ad season ended.

Intuit led the January list, boosting podcast ad spend to $2.9 million, up more than fivefold from December, as tax season drove increased marketing activity. Consumer goods giant Unilever followed with $1.7 million, marking a sharp month-to-month increase as large brand advertisers leaned further into podcast reach.

Several companies entered podcasting at meaningful scale after little or no prior spending. Monday.com spent $1.4 million during the month, while financial services firm Blucora reached $1.3 million. Home services marketplace ANGI Group also ramped up quickly, surpassing $1 million after minimal activity in December.

Consumer and lifestyle brands showed strong growth as well. CrownCoinsCasino and laundry service Rinse each exceeded $900,000 in January spending, while fitness brand Peloton increased its investment to nearly $800,000. Financial services firms OnDeck and Experian, along with healthcare platform Grow Therapy, also posted substantial gains.

The movers and shakers list was rounded out by consumer brands including Athletic Brewing Company, Sleep Number, and Boll & Branch, each significantly increasing podcast budgets after relatively modest spending the prior month.

Magellan AI analyzes podcast advertising data from the top 3,000 podcasts in the U.S., as ranked by Apple Podcasts. Magellan AI’s proprietary model is used to estimate advertising spend. It includes factors such as the number of ads and variation in ad load detected for a given episode, the number of downloads for each episode, and estimated CPMs as reported in select media kits and estimated based on popularity.
