Podcast Activity Approaches Record Highs.

The podcast industry may be launching fewer new shows than in years past, but the number of podcasts actively producing content continues to grow. Third-quarter figures from Listen Notes show 563,571 podcasts have been active so far in 2026, the highest level since the pandemic-fueled boom of 2020 and 2021. The increase suggests that while fewer creators are entering the market, podcasting continues to maintain a substantial base of active publishers.

The strength of the active podcast base is particularly notable when compared with recent years. This year’s figure is already more than double either annual total in 2024 or 2025 and is approaching the pandemic-era peaks of 2020 and 2021.

The contrast is particularly striking when compared with new podcast launches. Listen Notes reports 113,332 new podcasts have debuted through September, putting 2026 on pace for its fewest launches since 2017. The slowdown has become particularly pronounced in recent months. The September total was the lowest full-month figure so far this year, with less than half the 20,236 human-created shows that debuted in January.

Across the third quarter, 25,790 human-created podcasts launched, suggesting the industry continues to move away from the rapid influx of new creators that characterized earlier years. The monthly decline also indicates that the slowdown is continuing rather than stabilizing.

But fewer launches don’t necessarily mean less content. Listen Notes reports 19.8 million podcast episodes have been published so far in 2026. At that pace, the industry could produce more than 26 million episodes for the full year, approaching the 27.3 million episodes published during 2025.

Podcast episode production peaked above 31 million in 2020 and 2021 but has remained relatively steady in the years since. The sustained output suggests that established shows continue to account for much of podcasting’s production activity, even as the pipeline of new titles narrows.

Another sign of the industry’s changing dynamics is the relatively modest number of podcasts that have permanently ended. Listen Notes has classified 15,985 podcasts as “dead” so far in 2026. That compares with 35,320 for all of 2025 and 47,509 in 2024. The totals remain well below the pandemic-era shakeout, when more than 167,000 podcasts were classified as dead in both 2020 and 2021.

Listen Notes considers a podcast dead when its RSS feed has been deleted or its publisher has marked the show as complete. That means the classification doesn’t necessarily include shows that have simply stopped releasing new episodes while keeping their feeds available.

The relatively low number of dead podcasts, combined with the growing number of active shows, reinforces the picture of an industry increasingly driven by sustained publishing rather than a constant churn of launches and closures.

AI Production Explodes

The latest data also offers a clearer picture of artificial intelligence’s growing role in podcast creation. Listen Notes now separates human-created and AI-generated podcasts in its monthly launch figures — revealing that AI accounts for a substantial share of new shows entering the market.

During the third quarter, 10,531 AI-generated podcasts launched, representing approximately 29% of the total new podcasts recorded during July, August and September. The data shows AI’s share has fluctuated throughout the year. It reached a high of 32.1% in February and by September, AI’s share had fallen to 26.1%, its lowest level since January.

The figures suggest AI-generated podcasts have become a meaningful component of new podcast creation, even as the overall pace of launches slows. They also underscore why distinguishing human-produced shows from automated content is increasingly important when assessing the industry’s growth.

Geographically, podcasting remains heavily concentrated in the U.S. Listen Notes reports 64.9% of podcasts created so far have originated in the U.S. Brazil ranks a distant second, representing 5.6% of the global total. Indonesia follows at 3.9%, Germany at 3.1% and France at 2.6%. The UK accounts for another 1.9% of the worldwide podcast universe.

English also remains the dominant language, accounting for 60.8% of all podcasts tracked by Listen Notes, or approximately 2.3 million shows. Spanish ranks second at 10.4%, followed by Portuguese (5.8%), Indonesian (3.8%) and German (3.1%).
