The Podcast Academy has announced the nominees for its third annual Awards for Excellence in Audio, otherwise known as The Ambies. The list includes 185 nominees across 26 categories with winners selected by voting members of The Podcast Academy. Designed to celebrate excellence in podcasting as well as elevate the status of podcasting as a medium for entertainment, information, storytelling and expression, the trophies will be handed out March 7. Organizers earlier announced that comedian, actor and podcast host Larry Wilmore will host the ceremony from the International Theater in Las Vegas. It will also be live-streamed on Amazon Music and Twitch.
The Podcast Academy says there was a 21% increase in the number of podcasts submitted for consideration this year. The result is three-quarters of the nominees feature a host or performer who is a person of color and/or female.
Among the big nominee recipients are Bone Valley, Direct Deposit, Fiasco: The AIDS Crisis, Last Known Position, Reclaimed: The Story of Mamie Till Mobley, and Moriarty – each podcast nabbed three separate nomination. There also several first-time nominees, including Anderson Cooper, Cecily Strong, Cole Sprouse, Eric Austin, JB Smoove, Rory Culkin, and Sarah Yarkin, among others. The Podcast Academy has also introduced a new category: Best DIY Podcast.

Organizers say eligible new members of The Podcast Academy will be able to vote to determine this year’s winners if applications are submitted by February 1.
