Half of Podtrac’s top 20 shows during May posted month-to-month movement up the ranker, while the top four podcasts – led by the New York Times’ The Daily – remained steady. The biggest moves came from the ABC News podcast 20/20, which advanced three spots to No. 12, and from CNN’s 5 Thing podcast, which moved up three and returned to the top 20.
The drop of This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von from No. 7 in April to No. 13 in May helped a lot of shows move up in the ranker, including Barstool Sport’s Pardon My Take, which returned to the top ten.
The return of 5 Things to the top 20 pushed the New York Times’ Serial out of the ranker in May, a month after it reentered the list with the release of the show’s fourth season with a series about the history of the U.S. military prison in Guantánamo, Cuba. The Podtrac data suggests the latest season has not caught on with listeners as quickly as previous seasons of the show credited with helping launch a wave of interest in podcasting a decade ago.
Overall, Podtrac says May brought mixed results for U.S. publishers. Three of the top 22 publishers had increases in their unique monthly audience, while nine had increases or were flat in the number of U.S. downloads compared to April.
