iHeartMedia has launched the iHeartRadio “Thank a Teacher” campaign in collaboration with longtime partner DonorsChoose, a nonprofit dedicated to helping U.S. public school educators access essential classroom resources.
This month-long media initiative aims to honor the dedicated teachers shaping the future of America’s youth while also spotlighting the critical role they play in educating, mentoring, and inspiring students, often while facing limited funding and resources.
Through Aug. 29, iHeartRadio is accepting nominations of exceptional public-school teachers in communities who go above and beyond for their students. To ensure that nominees are active teachers at U.S. public schools, all submissions will be reviewed by DonorsChoose.
Throughout August, selected teachers will be highlighted on local iHeartRadio stations. Then in September, five nominated educators will be randomly chosen to receive $5,000 DonorsChoose gift cards to support their classroom needs.
To further support the cause, iHeartMedia is contributing $500,000 in public service announcements to promote DonorsChoose and its mission. These PSAs will air across all iHeartMedia radio stations, raising awareness about the urgent needs in public school classrooms and encouraging listeners to support their local educators by donating at donorschoose.org.
“Every year, millions of educators spend their own money to fill gaps in classroom resources to ensure that their students have the tools they need to succeed,” Jon Zellner, President of Programming Operations and Digital Music for iHeartMedia, said in a release. “Many go even further, offering emotional support to students facing challenges both inside and outside the classroom. iHeartRadio’s Thank a Teacher aims to shine a light on the quiet and positive work happening in classrooms across the country and to offer a very public thank you to the teachers who are doing so much.”
“Public school teachers are about to launch the back-to-school season, and they’re doing everything they can to prepare their classrooms for students,” Alix Guerrier, CEO of DonorsChoose, added. “iHeartRadio’s Thank a Teacher is making sure that educators feel appreciated for going the extra mile, especially as they work hard to get students what they need to kick off a new school year.”
