iHeartMedia Promotes More Precise Targeting For Local Radio Ads.

iHeartMedia is promoting more precise audience-targeting strategies for local radio advertisers, combining traditional factors such as geography, format, and time of day, with identity-based targeting and measurement typically only available in digital media, to help businesses reach potential customers and measure campaign results.

The company outlines four primary considerations for local audio campaigns: location, station format, time of day and audience. The strategy is intended to help businesses align advertising with specific objectives, including increasing store traffic, generating phone calls and leads, and building awareness within local markets.

Geographic targeting remains particularly important for businesses serving specific communities. Restaurants, retailers and service providers need to reach consumers within practical distances of their locations or service areas. Measuring results in the same markets where advertisements run can help advertisers assess campaign effectiveness.

Station formats offer another way to connect with potential customers. Listeners select stations based on music, personalities, conversation, interests and daily routines, giving advertisers opportunities to place messages in environments that reflect their intended audiences.

iHeartMedia cited research indicating that 80% of listeners trust their favorite station’s host to “speak for me and my community,” while 78% trust product recommendations from their favorite radio host. The company said those relationships can reinforce the relevance of advertising, particularly for businesses seeking to establish connections with local consumers.

Timing also can influence campaign performance. Restaurants may want to reach consumers while they are deciding where to eat, while retailers may target shoppers during shopping trips. Service businesses may benefit from reaching prospective customers when they can respond to an advertisement.

The company cited research showing that 90% of consumers make dining decisions while driving at least some of the time. In addition, 74% said hearing a fast-food advertisement while driving makes them more likely to consider that restaurant.

Identity-based planning is another component of iHeartMedia’s approach. AudioGraph combines audience intelligence with predictive listening models and AI-powered planning to identify the stations and dayparts where specific consumers are most likely to be listening.

Advertisers can define audiences relevant to their objectives, including custom segments that incorporate their own first-party customer data and identity-based audience intelligence. The approach allows campaign planners to begin with the consumers they want to reach rather than relying exclusively on a station’s overall demographic profile.

The company cited results from an AudioGraph campaign for a major retailer seeking to reach homeowners. According to iHeartMedia, audience-based broadcast planning delivered 27% greater precision in reaching the intended audience and 49% stronger store visitation outcomes than traditional demographic planning.

Across a broader group of tests, AudioGraph’s identity-based planning was 34% more precise in reaching target audiences than traditional approaches and produced 75% stronger key performance indicator outcomes. In campaigns matching advertisers’ first-party data, the solution reached 14% more known customers than traditional planning methods.

The distinction between local and national audio advertising largely reflects differences in campaign objectives, according to iHeartMedia. Local businesses typically prioritize measurable actions such as calls, website visits, leads and store traffic. National advertisers may focus on broader measures, including awareness, purchase intent, sales lift, incremental reach and return on advertising spending.

The company also emphasized measurement, citing options that include website lift, call lift, store visitation and online lead or conversion lift. Such metrics can help local advertisers evaluate whether campaigns are producing outcomes tied to their business goals.

Combining radio’s broad reach and trusted personalities with audience-based planning can help advertisers deliver more relevant messages without sacrificing scale.
