iHeartMedia Chicago Recruits Kashon Powell As VP/Programming.

Kashon Powell, who was notably the first female VP of Programming at Radio One, has joined iHeartMedia Chicago, where she will serve as VP of Programming of urban contemporary WGCI (107.5), urban AC “V103” WVAZ, inspirational gospel WGRB (1390), and talk “BIN 640” WMFN-AM. Powell, who will begin her new role Aug. 18, previously held programming roles at iHeartMedia stations in Philadelphia and Virginia in between her two stints at Radio One.

“Kashon has an exceptional track record of success, consistently driving results and inspiring teams,” James Howard, Senior Vice President of Programming, says in a news release. “We are thrilled to welcome her to our Chicago team, where her expertise will help strengthen the connection with our listeners.”

Powell began her radio career in 1992 at Radio One rhythmic CHR “97.9 The Box” KBXX Houston as a research assistant and worked her way through the ranks to become the first female PD for the station. She joined trade publication Radio & Records in 2002 as urban editor. Powell segued to iHeartMedia urban contemporary “Power 99” WUSL Philadelphia as APD in 2004 and eventually rose to PD of WUSL and urban AC sister WDAS-FM (105.3). She also served as Director of Urban Programming for iHeartMedia Virginia and re-joined Radio One in 2015 as PD of “Majic 102.3.” She was named OM of the cluster in 2017 and rose to VP of Programming for the company in 2019. In addition to her corporate programming role, she also produced national programs, including the Urban One Honors.

“I am excited to return to iHeartMedia to lead these legendary brands and contribute to the legacy of such iconic radio stations,” Powell remarked. “A huge thank you to James Howard, Thea Mitchem, Brad Hardin and Doc Wynter for this incredible opportunity.”

Powell succeeds VP of Urban Programming Derrick Brown, who has exited the company.
