Here’s What Sony Music Entertainment Has Lined Up For Podcasting.

Sony Music Entertainment previewed a slate of new podcasts that it has cued up for the coming months during this week’s 2021 IAB UK Podcast Upfront. The list includes Hemingway’s Picasso, a show that will explore the intersection of art, drugs and mystery. It debuts Oct. 18. In addition, SME showcased several podcasts from the past year, many of which will return for new seasons soon, including Smoke Screen: The Sellout on October 26 and Power: Hugh Hefner on November 1.

The company also announced one of its newest podcast projects, The Female Gaze, which will premiere next year from illustrator, writer and social activist Florence Given. In the series, the best-selling author and artist will break out of the polarizing left and right echo chambers to connect people by raising conversation around provocative issues with passion, humor and sensitivity.

“Sony Music’s proud history as a global entertainment business has helped strategically position our newly expanded podcast division to super-serve creators and deliver premium original content for audiences around the world,” said Jez Nelson, EVP and Co-Head of Global Podcasts at Sony Music Entertainment. “As podcasting continues to grow globally, we are keenly focused on developing more ways to reach diverse audiences and growing audio consumption everywhere,” he said in a statement.

In June, Sony Music Entertainment bought the U.K. audio producer Somethin’ Else and its founder, radio veteran Nelson, joined the company to spearhead Sony’s global podcast content and business development strategy. SME had been working with Somethin’ Else since January 2020 when it announced a joint venture to develop a slate of podcasts and pursue a range of new international podcasting opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic. Sony has also teamed with veteran podcast producer Renay Richardson to form a London-based unit called Broccoli Content.
