The global market for podcasts is set for explosive expansion, according to a report from Market US that projects the sector will grow from roughly $2.92 billion in 2024 to $30.4 billion by 2034. The ten-year outlook reflects a compound annual growth rate of about 26.4%, driven by rising listener demand for customized audio experiences and rapid improvements in AI-powered recommendation technology.
Market.US says North America held more than 42% of the market in 2024, fueled by strong smartphone penetration, high podcast adoption, and a maturing digital-audio ecosystem. The report identifies content-curation services as the largest service category, accounting for more than half the market, while AI and machine-learning technologies make up the biggest share of the underlying tech, reflecting the central role sophisticated recommendation engines now play in podcast discovery.

Monetization trends are also shifting. The report says subscription revenue accounts for nearly two-thirds of the market, as consumers show growing willingness to pay for ad-free or highly personalized experiences. In the meantime, advertisers account for a sizable portion of monetization — one cited figure puts the advertiser/brand end-user slice at roughly 58.3%.
The study points to several growth catalysts, including the global expansion of smart speakers, connected-car systems, and multi-device listening — all environments where personalization boosts engagement. But it also notes challenges, particularly around data privacy, IP rights, and intensifying competition among platforms racing to differentiate their personalization models.
AI Becomes Growth Engine
Artificial intelligence is emerging as the defining technology behind the rapid expansion of podcast platforms, according to Market.US. The report says AI and machine-learning technologies account for the largest share of the tech stack, reflecting how recommendation algorithms, predictive modeling, and automated content-tagging now power nearly every aspect of personalized listening.
Analysts note that platforms increasingly rely on AI to analyze listener behavior, refine content suggestions, and deliver individualized playlists across devices — from smartphones to connected cars. These systems also enable more advanced features such as mood-based recommendations, dynamic sequencing, and automated discovery pathways that adapt in real time as user habits shift.
As competition intensifies, the report says differentiation will hinge on the sophistication of these AI capabilities. Companies investing in deeper behavioral modeling, metadata enrichment, and cross-platform personalization are expected to gain an advantage, particularly as subscription models grow and advertisers demand more precise targeting.
Market.US also flags potential risks: the heavy reliance on user data raises ongoing concerns about privacy, transparency, and compliance, even as AI becomes essential to the listening experience. Despite these challenges, the report concludes that AI-driven personalization is now “central to the market’s long-term growth trajectory,” positioning the technology as both the engine and the competitive battleground for the next decade of podcasting.
