Fewer November Debuts, But Industry Paces Toward Record Number Of Active Shows In 2024.

The holiday season typically sees a slowdown in new show launches and November brought another dip in debuts. Listen Notes says 10,389 new shows released their first episodes last month, the smallest of any month this year. The tally is also nearly half of the 19,073 launches Listen Notes reported a year earlier.

Listen Notes says 169,975 new podcasts have debuted worldwide so far in 2024, with it likely that the year-end total will fall below the 232,077 recorded in 2023. The last time Listen Notes reported a year-end total below 200,000 was in 2017 when it says 132,827 new series launched.

Even with new shows, the number of new episodes continues to climb. Listen Notes says 24,609,572 episodes have been released during 2024, with a few weeks left to go in the year adding to the total. But the number may not hit the 29.8 million reached last year.

The numbers point to industry health. Listen Notes says there are 661,728 active shows in 2024 — defined by releasing an episode a specific year — which is on track to set a new annual record. Last year, 265,084 were considered active, and during the pandemic peak in 2021, the total reached 605,019.

There are also the fewest number of dead podcasts since 2015. Listen Notes says 24,461 are considered “dead” this year. That is roughly half as many as a year ago. Listen Notes considers a show to have “died” if the RSS feed of a podcast is deleted or its iTunes complete tag is a “yes.”

Listen Notes, the podcast search engine and database, says overall there are at least 3,458,361 podcasts worldwide, and 166,795,721 episodes.
