Whether year-over-year or month-to-month, three of the top five formats in Inside Radio/PrecisionTrak’s format counts for February 2025 — contemporary Christian, religion (including religious teaching, hymns, and other related content) and Spanish-language — keep adding stations.

Second-ranked religion passed news/talk in total stations midway into 2023 and has kept adding new outlets ever since. Over the past 12 months, it’s brought in 39 new stations, including 21 since October 2024 and two since January 2025.

Contemporary Christian, ranked fourth, has a similar growth story. It has added 41 new stations since February 2024, with 20 since October, and one more from January. Spanish, ranking fifth, racked up 20 more outlets year-over-year, 17 since October, and five from a month ago.

While country, the format with the most stations, has also added to its total from a year ago, it has lost seven since last September. Third-place news/talk hit the 2,000-station mark in April 2024 but has lost eight outlets since. On a year-over-year basis, it’s down by seven, and since January 2025 down by five.

The lower half of the top 10 shows only eighth-ranked classic rock with more stations, six more vs. a year ago while flat since November 2024.

Sixth-ranked variety (including stations with three or more distinct formats, either block-programmed or simultaneously) has lost the most stations year-over-year, 37, with no change from January 2025. Top 40, ranked 10th, has shed 28 since last February, and three from a month ago.

For classic hits and sports, ranked seventh and ninth respectively, the losses aren’t nearly as bad, with the former down by just two stations, and the latter by four, vs. a year ago.

Just below the top 10, 11th-ranked adult contemporary has gained five outlets year-over-year for a total 546 stations, while 12th-place hot AC shed 19 for 423, and 13th-ranked alternative rock down by five, for 421.
