Dan Bongino, the former radio and television host who joined the Trump administration earlier this year, says he will step down as FBI Deputy Director in January, ending a brief tenure that began in March.
Bongino announced his departure Wednesday night on social media, thanking President Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel for the opportunity to serve. “Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you,” he wrote.
The announcement followed a day of speculation about his status, with multiple reports indicating Bongino had already begun clearing out his office. President Trump later confirmed the move, telling reporters Bongino “did a great job” but is expected to return to media. “I think he wants to go back to his show,” Trump said.
Before entering government, Bongino built a large national audience as a conservative commentator across radio, podcasting with Cumulus Media, and on cable news outlets, making his appointment one of the most high-profile media-to-government transitions of the current administration.
Sources say Bongino was expected to serve roughly one year in the role under Patel. He reportedly weighed leaving earlier this summer following a dispute with Bondi over the Justice Department’s handling of records related to Jeffrey Epstein.
With Bongino’s exit, co-deputy director Andrew Bailey is expected to assume the traditional day-to-day operational responsibilities of the position. An FBI spokesperson declined comment.
Bongino has not announced his next move, though multiple sources believe a return to broadcasting and political commentary is likely.
