Small businesses are facing mounting pressure to make every marketing dollar count as an increasingly fragmented media environment creates new challenges for business owners seeking measurable results, according to Audacy Insights.
The company said local businesses are grappling with three major marketing priorities identified by eMarketer: building a strong brand, establishing trust with consumers, and optimizing digital marketing efforts to drive conversions. At the same time, business owners must navigate a growing number of advertising channels, emerging technologies and heightened expectations to demonstrate return on investment.
The first challenge is building a brand in an increasingly crowded marketplace. According to the report, 38% of small business owners consider building a strong brand and reputation a top priority, while 74% view brand building as critical to achieving long-term business goals. With consumers exposed to a constant stream of marketing messages, standing out has become more difficult for local businesses.
Audacy argues that audio platforms, including radio, streaming audio and podcasts, can help address that challenge by providing consistent exposure and creating emotional connections with audiences throughout their daily routines.
“Brands that win stand out by owning a piece of the programming with key sponsorships, entitlements, sports features, and studio sponsorships — driving memorable frequency and tremendous scale across your entire market,” Audacy says. “These integrations position businesses as part of the consumer experience rather than interruptions to it.”
The second challenge is building trust and authenticity with consumers who have become increasingly skeptical of advertising. According to eMarketer, 77% of businesses are investing heavily in community-driven content to strengthen credibility and trust. For local businesses competing in crowded markets, establishing authentic connections with consumers has become a critical objective.
Audacy said trusted radio personalities and podcast hosts can play an important role in helping businesses earn consumer confidence. The company noted that listeners often develop strong personal relationships with on-air talent and creators, making endorsements and recommendations more influential.
The third challenge is optimizing digital marketing efforts while generating measurable conversions. Business owners increasingly want proof that advertising campaigns are producing results such as website traffic, store visits and purchases. At the same time, the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence-powered search tools and digital marketing platforms has added new complexity to the marketing landscape.
Audacy said combining audio advertising with digital marketing can help businesses address those concerns by linking brand awareness and trust-building efforts with lower-funnel actions. The company said audio helps generate awareness and engagement, while digital marketing captures consumer intent and encourages purchases and other measurable actions. According to Audacy, the combination drives more than 40% of audiences to purchase and conversion.
The company said integrated campaigns are becoming increasingly important as consumers move between audio, social media, streaming services, video platforms, search engines and other digital experiences throughout the day.
“Success for local businesses today requires more than isolated tactics or one-size-fits-all solutions,” Audacy says. “It requires integrated campaigns that combine trusted media, local connection, digital precision, and measurable performance. That’s why Audio and digital marketing are stronger together. Radio builds brands. Talent builds trust. Digital marketing drives conversion.”
Audacy also highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence on advertising and marketing, noting that AI-enabled search tools are changing how consumers discover products and services, while AI-powered platforms are reshaping media planning, targeting and creative development.
“In a fragmented media landscape, technology matters,” Audacy says. “But trust, local ties, and authentic connection are what turn exposure into action. Success is about finding the right combination of platforms through teamwork and innovation.”
