Another U.S. Political Divide: Where We Shop.

Democrats and Republicans differ when it comes to their retail favorites, Chain Store Age reports, citing data from Affinity Solutions’ Consumer Purchase Insights.

According to the numbers, which are based on actual credit card, debit card and transaction data from the second quarter of 2024, Democrats spend more at Costco, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Republicans, meanwhile, go for Walmart, Dollar General and Lowe’s.

Affinity Solutions also found that Democrats spent more with airlines, wholesale clubs and department stores, with Republicans leading at discount stores, service stations and fast-food restaurants.

The largest categorical divide, the data showed, is in the discount space — where Republicans, on average, spending $167.20 more than Democrats. Service stations and airlines had the next highest spending discrepancies. Republicans, on average, spent $45.94 more at service stations. Democrats, meanwhile, spent $31 more on airlines.

“In addition,” Chain Store Age writes, “some brands cross party lines. Five Below, Stitch Fix, Teleflora and HIMS were among the brands with the lowest level of spending discrepancy between Republicans and Democrats.”

In terms of brands, Affinity Solutions found the largest spending difference occurred at Walmart, where Republicans spending $142.89 more than Democrats. Costco had the next highest difference, with Democrats spending $34.11 more than Republicans, followed by Dollar General, with Republicans outspending Democrats by $20.91, and Lowe’s, with Republicans outspending Democrats by $14.49.
