The 2020 election will generate some $5 billion in advertising sales this year, according to Magna Global, a 24% increase from 2016. That’s the good news for TV. While the internet will eclipse $1 billion in U.S. political ad sales for the first time this year, the bulk of that money (between $3 billion and $4 billion) will go to TV networks. Now here’s the bad news: Not even a record year for political advertising can rescue the TV business.
