NPR to Relaunch ‘Consider This’ As A Localized Daily News Podcast.

National Public Radio is banding together with a dozen local public radio stations in 10 markets to relaunch “Consider This,” which the public media powerhouse is rebranding as the nation’s first-ever localized daily news podcast.

The podcast, NPR says, will combine reporting at the community level with national insights from the broadcaster.

“This national/local on-demand experience, a first not just for public radio but for the podcast industry as a whole, is made possible by public radio’s shared journalism and digital networks,” NPR reports.

The 10 markets that will get the reimagined “Consider This” include Boston (WBUR and GBH); New York (WNYC); Philadelphia (WHYY); Washington, DC (WAMU); Chicago (WBEZ); Minneapolis/St. Paul (MPR); Dallas (KERA); Los Angeles (KPCC and KCRW); San Francisco (KQED); and Portland, OR (OPB).

“This project is truly the best reflection of the public radio mission,” says Neal Carruth, NPR’s Senior Director for On Demand Programming. “’Consider This’ is now a collaborative podcast that will know where users are and deliver them the news of the day from their community and beyond. It demonstrates what only the public radio network has the ability to do.”

For now, NPR says, listeners who aren’t in participating markets will continue to hear the national version. NPR expects to add more stations next year.

“NPR has always partnered with our Member stations to deliver local content to users, from newscasts to radio stories,” said Stacey Goers, Senior Product Manager of Podcasts. “Now we are expanding that partnership to deliver an even better blended experience by meeting users where they already are on their favorite podcasting platform. NPR has long supported the open ecosystem of podcasting, including experimentation and growth in podcasting technology. With ‘Consider This’, we’re excited to use our sponsorship technology to deliver editorial content in a new way.”

“Consider This” was launched in March as a COVID-19-related podcast before expanding in June. New episodes are scheduled to drop each weekday afternoon around 5pm (ET), starting Wednesday (Sept. 9).
