The number of new podcasts launching each month continues to slide, but a sizable crop of new shows continues to be at the fingertips of fans of the medium. Listen Notes reports 9,493 new podcasts debuted in July. That is the smallest number of any month this year, and the total is less than half the 20,794 podcasts that launched in January. More than 200 new shows have been detected by Listen Notes so far in August.
The July additions brings the total number of new show debuts in 2024 to 109,145 worldwide. And Listen Notes reports 15.7 million episodes have been released by podcasts new and old. It says the number of dead podcasts has also increased to 14,990. Listen Notes considers a show to have died when the RSS feed is deleted, or its iTunes “completed” tag is marked “yes” by the publisher.
Listen Notes, the podcast search engine and database, says overall there are now nearly 3.4 million podcasts worldwide that have published more than 203 million episodes.
