December PPMs: All-Christmas And News/Talk Stations Continue To Dominate.

All-Christmas and news/talk stations continue to thrive in medium-sized markets across the country as more December PPM ratings roll in. That matches the December PPM trend in the top 10 markets. All-Christmas stations are ranked first in Portland, Charlotte, Salt Lake City, Orlando and Jacksonville. News outlets rule the roost in Sacramento, Austin, Milwaukee and Raleigh.

The Portland market is a perfect example of the overwhelming trend in the December 2020 PPMs as all-Christmas and news/talk lead the rankings. iHeartMedia AC “K-103” KKCW, which went all-Christmas for the 20th consecutive year, leads the market, rising 8.4-8.2-10.5. KKCW’s Christmas bump moves Oregon Public Broadcasting news/talk KOPB-FM/AM to second, even as it adds more than a share-and-a-half (7.6-8.3-9.9), followed by Alpha Media news/talk KXL-FM (7.0-7.0-6.3).

The annual move to all-Christmas helped Beasley Media Group AC “K-104.7” WKQC rise to the top of the Charlotte market, adding a nearly four shares to its November numbers (4.9-5.5-9.1). Entercom news/talk WBT-AM/FM takes third in the market (6.9-7.4-6.7).

Last month’s first place logjam in San Antonio now has Cox Media Group classic hits KONO-FM alone in first (8.1-7.7-7.5), followed by iHeartMedia news/talk WOAI (6.3-7.7-7.4). iHeartMedia AC “Q-101.9” KQXT-FM rode Santa Claus Lane to fourth place in the market (3.7-3.5-5.8).

Even losing more than a share month-over-month, iHeartMedia news/talk KFBK-FM & AM remains in first in Sacramento (8.5-9.1-7.8). Bonneville AC “Mix 96” KYMX rises to third with its all-Christmas music format (3.7-5.2-6.7).

Bonneville soft AC “FM 100.3” KSFI Salt Lake City plugged in the holiday hits and rode them to the top of the market, adding nearly five shares (6.9-6.7-11.6). News/talk sister KSL-FM/AM remains in second (7.4-7.2-7.5), while November’s market leader iHeartMedia news/talk KNRS-FM/AM drops to third (7.6-9.5-7.4). Post-election chatter and continuing pandemic coverage helped University of Utah news/talk KUER-FM pick up more than a share (4.8-4.6-5.7) for fifth place.

Pittsburgh’s all-Christmas outlets, iHeartMedia classic hits WWSW-FM (9.5-9.0-8.6) and Renda Broadcasting AC “Wish 99.7” WSHH (3.7-4.1-4.6), placed second and seventh respectively. Entercom news KDKA moved 4.8-5.4-5.0 and drops from fourth to sixth.

iHeartMedia AC “Magic 107.7” WMGF Orlando was one of the earlier Christmas converts and it paid off handsomely. The station adds five shares (7.7-8.3-13.3) to take first in the market. Community Communications news/talk WMFE-FM rises 3.3-3.6-4.0.

iHeartMedia AC “Sunny 106.5” KSNE-FM’s rotation of Christmas classics added more than three shares (6.8-5.6-8.9), placing the station first in Las Vegas. Nevada Public Radio news/talk KNPR was also up in December (2.8-3.0-3.7).

In Austin, Emmis news/talk WIBC (9.2-10-9-10.0) leads the market. Renda Broadcasting AC WEJZ rode Santa’s sleigh to the top of the rankers in Jacksonville (9.5-9.8-10.0), followed by Cox Media Group news/talk WOKV-FM (10.7-11.7-10.0). iHeartMedia news/talk WISN is first in Milwaukee (11.2-12.7-10.7) and Good Karma Brands news/talk WTMJ is third (8.0-7.1-6.8). University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill news/talk WUNC leads the Raleigh-Durham market, rising 7.0-8.3-9.4), while Entercom news/talk WTIC is second in Hartford (7.8-8.8-8.1).

The December 2020 PPM survey covers the period from Nov. 5-Dec. 2. All shares quoted are Persons 6+, Mon-Sun 6am-Mid.
